**This is a 6-week course. Your registration fee includes 1 class per week for 6 weeks**

[Fall Quarter / Term I] 9/9/19 – 10/20/19
[Saturdays] 11:00AM – 1:00PM

In this course, students will gain an introductory knowledge of architecture. The first half of the course will cover terms that architects and designers use to describe spaces and structures; it will also include a guide to some of the more traditional styles of architecture before moving on to principles of modernism and postmodernism and how they apply to architecture. The second half of the course will cover the “why” and “what” of architecture today, and the role sustainability plays in architecture; the course will end with local examples of notable styles and historic buildings.

There is no requirement to know anything about architecture or urban design before joining this course. Given the early class time, the classes will be structured in a way that allows for a quick and engaging pace. The only requirement is that you come ready to learn and ask questions.

Materials Fee:

There are no materials fees, however there will be suggestions for further readings on topics after each class. These will not be required to participate in discussions but help students who want to get more information on a specific item covered.

Teacher Bio: Ace Houston

Andrew Grant Houston, known by his friends as Ace, is an architect and urban designer who is passionate about changing the way people live in cities. He is the founder and head of design for House Cosmopolitan, an architecture practice designing housing and social spaces. He’s excited to teach this course because he believes more people should know about the buildings they are in an around everyday and why things look the way they do. Aside from that, he is always excited to share his knowledge and experience on many things. You can usually find him around Seattle listening to new music, coming up with a new design idea, or trying a new restaurant.
